A New Year
“What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That’s not been said a thousand times?”
Ella Wheeler Wilcox the American author and poet summed it up pretty well.
I wonder who actually came up with the idea of reviewing your year and then setting resolutions for the year to come.
Anne Halkett writer, wrote in her diary of 1671, “Resolutions “ January 2nd “I will not offend any more.”
“And yet, I believe there are multitudes of people, accustomed to receive injunctions of new year resolutions, who will sin all the month of December, with a serious determination of beginning the new year with new resolutions and new behaviour, and with the full belief that they shall thus expiate and wipe away all their former faults.” This was written in boston Newspaper January 1st 1813.
So the tradition of making new year resolutions has been with us foor many years.
I am not too fond of the resolutions concept but for many it really helps them both mentally and physically. Anything which helps our mental health is a good thing.
So, if you do choose to embrace the tradition I hope it is a resolution that brings you joy.
“Joy”, what a wonderful sounding word. Have you noticed that it is very difficult to pronounce the word “JOY” without smiling?
