Storms

Here in Ireland we are on the third storm in as many days. Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin have raged havoc in various different ways.

The writer of the following poem looked on stormy seas in a differnt light.

It was originally written in Old Irish and was found on the margin of a manuscript which was dated to around 850BCE. This was dueing the time of the Viking invasions of Ireland.

This unknown Irish Poet welcomed turbulent seas and storms. They gauranteed safety form the viking longboats.


The Viking Terror

Bitter is the winf tonight.

It tosses the ocean’s white hair:

Tonight I fear not the fierce warriors of Norway

Coursing on the Irish Sea.
