Learning Poetry Part 2
I have continued with the attempt of learning poetry as Giles invited me. Please see previous post, posted september 11 th.
I decided to do this poetry learning last thing at night. Instead of reading a novel I would learn a line or two of poetry. Then sleep and wake in the morning quoting the two lines I had learnt.
That was the theory. The reality however was totally different.
Ten nights later I realised that I was still stuck with only 4 lines
‘How pleasant to know Mr. Lear!’ While I had read a few novels and I could remeber those plots while Mr Lear remained as elusive as ever.
Early the other morning while sipping a lovely mug of coffee, I watched the sunrise while I sat on the back step. Suburbia was quiet with only the motorway giving a background noise. A wind began to rise and the background noise grew as the wind made its way through the narrow gap between the shed and the wall. A scent of thyme wafted its way over to me as another swirl of wind touched the thyme leaves adding their own sound to the symphony that was building.
Surburbia was wakening when I roused myself . I headed inside and looked at the meagre few books which now make up my library. There were a few poetry books I had not been able to part with. I chose “Washing Windows, Irish Women Writing Poetry”.
Having put a sturdy piece of clear plastic over the open pages I fond myself coming back to the same poem. “Sounds” by Ellie rose McKee.
Now,I am a morning person so I am going to start tomorrow with learning just one line. It is a short poem so I should be able to manage it. Shouldn’t I ?
We will see!!!!!!
