Winter Olympics

I love the Olympic Games and I am on countdown to the Winter Olympics.

Now I am leaving aside the politics or can that really happen? Can sport be separated from politics? Can sport be separated from identifying issues which infringe on the liberties of individuals? It is also a very devisive area. Should they be separate?

The first time this question arose for me, was during apartheid in South Africa and the Irish Rugby Team going there on a tour. They defied a world wide sporting ban of South Africa in 1981. There was such an out cry that the IRFU had to publically apaologise and vow never to return to South Africa while the apartheid laws were in place and being enforced.

Well here’s the thing. This time I am going to watch the games. I am going to watch the sports events. I am going to be cheering on our six athletes. I will be waving the Irish flag and cheering them on.

Mine will be a tad smalller.

I am going to separate sports from politics and enjoy cheering on the Irish atheletes at the Winter Paralympics starting on March 4th and Winter Olympics starting February 4th.
