In Anticipation of Spring

For those looking forward to the days lengthening and the coming of spring. This poem was written by Paula Meehan.SEEDThe first warm day of springand I step out into the garden from the gloomof a house where hope had diedto tally the storm damage, to seek what mayhave survived. And finding some forgottenlupins I’d sown from seed last autumnholding in their fingers a raindrop eachlike a peace offering, or a promise,I am suddenly grateful and wouldoffer a prayer if I believed in God.But not believing, I bless the power of seed, its casual, useful persistence, and bless the power of sun,its conspiracy with the underground, and thank my stars the winter’s ended.
