Her Twist on Recipes
The ingredients were
2 teaspoons melted butter
225g self raising flour
50g caster sugar
125ml dairy milk
150ml olive oil
50g raisins
50g mixed peel
25g pine kernels
Mmmm she said. “That sounds nice and it would be pretty easy to do. No time like the present.”
With that she was off to the kitchen her favourite room in the house. Oh there were still changes, well perhaps not changes, more tweaks she would like to make but they would come in time.
Humming to herself she turned the electric oven of the black range to 160°C. Checked that the shelves were in the correct place. With the cake tin lined she took out her roomy earthen ware mixing bowl and nabbed the weighing scales as she was passing, putting them all on the counter top.
Next taking out her trusty steps and with the list of ingredients in her hand she started to assemble them together. Self raising flour she placed beside the scales. Sitting on the top step she looked at the ingredients again.
This will need a few changes.
“Caster sugar none in the press, it will have to be granulated”. she said out loud. “Dairy milk, cashew milk instead placing it beside the bowl. Olive oil don’t use it. Rapeseed will be too earthy so good old reliable sunflower instead.”
Making her way through the recipe she gradually gathered her ingredients. They were similar to the original but at the same time different. She was putting her own twist on it as she was known to do.
15 minutes later she was washing up all the bowls and spoons while her fruit cake baked in the oven. The coffee was ready for filtering. Now all she had to do was find a pen and paper and rewrite the recipe. Gone were the days when she would have remembered the changes. Now she wrote them down and found she was amassing a good range of new recipes.
“One day soon I am going to follow a recipe to the T and see how it tastes” she promised herself with a laugh. She would have to be organised to do that and organised was not a word she was comfortable with.
The oven timer bleeped and she slowly opened the oven door…..
