Stir Up Sunday

No, it is not an invitationto annoy people by stiring up friction. Stir up Sunday which is the last sunday before Advent was considered the day for making the Christmas Puddings.

It originated from Victorian times. In the large houses, with guests expected for Christmas, this was the day when the Christmas Puddings would be made and allowed to mature for Christmas.

I have always made sure that the Christmas Pud would be well and truely made before Stir Up Sunday, however I always seem to make another batch of Christmas Mincemeat on Stir Up Sunday. Just in case we might run out!!!!!

A friend used to use Stir Up Sunday to start writing those Christmas Cards which had to be posted abroad. Someone else I know always makes a decoration on Stir Yp Sunday and it becomes the first decoration to be seen in the build up to the season.

Although Stir Up Sunday is associated with the Anglican Church it has spread into part of the ritual of Christmas in many places.
